Conclusion of Gage's Service
Decisions to punish the people of Massachusetts was in full effect. This angered the Colonists a lot. They wanted their independence but all they were getting were more authorities and more restrictions. The Revolutionary War was roaring. Conflicts rose between the residents of the 13 colonies and the Colonial government. There were spies and lots of conversations about this war. Spies sent from Gage, were on a mission to find out what the strategy was of the Libertarians. However, little did he know that his wife, Margaret, was a patriot spy. [21] There were many months of waiting for the start of the actual fighting. No one wanted to make the first move. Many were in favor of independence from Great Britain.[22] Gage was in full charge of the British military. It was his choice on what to do with his troops and how to handle the Libertarians. [23]
After the win in the Battle of Bunker Hill, Thomas Gage was suspended by General Sir William Howe. Howe then took his men to Canada for a plan. Most Loyalists evacuated the city of Boston. Gage shortly returned back to England.[24] Through the thick and thin of the New World, Gage was there. He was the one that got instructions on what to do with rebels. He implemented many laws during his time in the government. This portrait was one that everyone knew. It depicted his strength and power through all 13 colonies. Many people know of the Revolutionary War. Mostyly remembering people like Paul Revere and John Adams for their roles as contibuters in the winning of independence. Gage is not one of those type of people only because of the side he was on during this war. He may not ne well known today but he was very well known in the time of the war. Singleton Copley shows the strength and power that Gage had through the Revolutionary War with his vibrant red coat, his eyes fixated on the viewer but keeping the attention to him and his troops in the background.[25]
