Leader of the British during the French and Indian War
In 1755 Thomas Gage was sent to America after staying in Flanders during a peacetime soldiering. He was given the opportunity to command the expedition in the French and Indian War. He was to command the army to fight against the French in the Ohio Valley. Both sides had armies from their parent countries and also had Native American allies. In July of that year he lead the army blindly into a forest ambush and killed most of his men. The French and Indian war was a war fought between the British colonies and new France. During the French and Indian War, Gage's job was to start and train a new regiment. Men that had "independent spirit" were dressed in camouflage coats and were trained to forest fight. He conducted himself bravely in combat but that just didn't do. His portrait was one that showed that he was brave but that wasn't really who he was. [12]
Gage took his troops and lead them into battle causing once again a disastrous loss for Britain. Thomas Gage again constructed a loss for Great Britain. He was promoted after this loss. Gage was known for being disciplined and strict, which is what his British superiors looked for in a leader. He became a brigadier and given a expedition to conquest Canada. Gage was to go to Lake Ontario and then capture Montreal. While that was happening James Wolfe was to attack the fortress of Quebec. Wolfe's expedition was a success but Gage's wasn't. Gage was a failure once again but it was always over shadowed by the success at Quebec. After ever other general went home Gage stayed in America and was promoted again. He was put as the commander in chief of the British America army. Being known for his discipline and orderliness ,like shown in the portrait, superiors in London gave him the promotion. [13]
